+ What is the Somewear Global Hotspot?

The Somewear Global Hotspot is the world's smallest satellite messaging device that makes sharing information during an adventure easy, even in the most remote locations. When paired to the Somewear App the Somewear Global Hotspot allows you to send and receive text messages, pull in weather reports, share your location and in the case of an emergency trigger an SOS call that will alert a search and rescue team of your situation.

+ When would I use the Somewear Global Hotspot?

The Somewear Global Hotspot is a must have in your travel gear to ensure that you are always in touch and always safe. Use it when you are traveling and need to check in with friends or family back home or when looking for the latest weather report without worrying about being in or out of cell coverage.

+ How should I use the Somewear Global Hotspot?

For best performance follow these simple tips:

  1. Identify an open area with a clear line of sight to the sky.
  2. Position the device flat with the Somewear logo facing the sky.
  3. Avoid obstructions in your surroundings including but not limited to tall buildings and dense foliage.

HOW IT WORKS

+ What satellite constellation does Somewear operate on?

The Somewear Global Hotspot uses the Iridium satellite network which is the most reliable satellite communication network in space today. With a cross-linked Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) constellation of 66 active satellites Iridium provides 100% global coverage across oceans, airways and polar regions.

+ What features are included on Somewear?

2-way text messaging, 24-hour and weekly weather reports, location tracking, SOS monitoring

+ What do indicator lights mean?

The Somewear Global Hotspot has 1 main indicator light.

  • Blinking White = On
  • Blinking Red = On, Low Battery
  • Solid Red = Charging
  • Solid White = Fully Charged

On the SOS keypad, on the front of the device, there are two LEDs. The top LED next to "Sending SOS" will blink white when an SOS message has been triggered to indicate the SOS message is in the process of sending, “Sending SOS".

The bottom LED next to "SOS Delivered" will turn on solid white when the SOS message has been delivered to emergency responders. When you cancel an SOS, both indicator lights will blink white continuously until the cancellation message has been confirmed as delivered.

+ How do I turn ON Somewear?

Hold the power button for 3 seconds until the white indicator light above the Somewear logo turns on.

+ How do I turn OFF Somewear?

Hold the power button for 3 seconds until the white indicator light above the Somewear logo fades out and turns off. Ensure the light is not flashing after a few seconds to confirm the device is off.

+ Can I use Somewear anywhere?

Yes the Somewear Global Hotspot has global coverage. By using Somewear you agree to comply with all applicable local laws in your country of operation.

+ Who can I communicate with using the Somewear Global Hotspot?

You can send messages to any email as well as United States and Canada cell phone numbers. Contacts should be stored in your phones contact book to then be able to access them on the Somewear App. Additionally, anyone can download the Somewear App and you can contact them through the messaging feature on the app.

+ Is Somewear Global Hotspot approved by the FCC and ISED?

Yes the Somewear Global Hotspot is approved by the FCC in the USA and ISED in Canada.

+ Do I need to have my phone with me to use my Somewear Global Hotspot?

You need your phone and the companion Somewear App to use the 2- way text messaging, weather report, and tracking functionality. You DO NOT need your phone to trigger and send an SOS distress signal directly from the device. However, in an emergency scenario your phone is valuable as you will be able to communicate directly with emergency responders in app.

+ How far can my phone and my Somewear Global Hotspot be from each other?

Your phone and Somewear Global Hotspot communicate over Bluetooth Low Energy. For optimal operation we recommend that you stay within 10 ft. of your device without any major obstructions (large trees, boulders, cars, walls, etc.) in between your phone and hotspot.

+ Can I use the Somewear App while in cellular range?

Yes, the messaging and weather functionality work over cellular networks. However, the tracking feature can only be used when connected to a Somewear Global Hotspot.

MESSAGING

+ How do I start a chat with someone?

Go to “Messages” tab. Select the “+” icon in the top right. Select the desired contact. Type away!

How do I manage my contact list? How do i add or edit a contact?

All contacts should be managed from your iPhone or Android contact list and they will be updated in Somewear automatically.

+ How do people find me on Somewear?

Users can find you on Somewear with the email you provided at sign-in. People looking to contact you should send to that email from the Somewear app.

+ Can I message an email and a phone number? Can I send to any kind of phone number?

You can send messages to any email as well as United States and Canada cell phone numbers. Contacts should be stored in your phones contact book to then be able to access them on the Somewear App. Additionally, anyone can download the Somewear App and you can contact them through the messaging feature on the app.

+ How do people I message respond to me?

  • If you send a message to a phone number: users can respond via SMS
  • If you send a message to an email: users can respond via the Somewear web application (link provided in the email to your recipient), www.somewear.co
  • If your recipient is already a registered user of Somewear they will receive the message and can respond in the Somewear app

WEATHER

+ How do I update weather?

To update weather: Go to the “Weather” tab in the app and pull down to refresh the weather report.

+ Does it cost me additional money to request a weather report?

No. Weather reports are included in your monthly subscription and can be considered the same amount of data as a single text message.

+ Are there different kinds of weather reports that you can request?

No. Every time you request weather you will receive a 24-hour report and a weekly report with temperature, precipitation and sunrise/sunset data.

+ Where does Somewear get its weather data?

Somewear utilizes the Dark Sky weather application to request weather data using your current location.

TRACKING

+ How can I share automatic location updates with other Somewear users?

To turn on tracking: select the “Tracking” tab in the app, in the top right corner select the track and share icon, select the “+” icon to add contacts.

+ How often is a pin dropped?

When tracking is turned on your location will be shared every 30 minutes. This interval cannot yet be adjusted, we are working on that!

+ How do i share my current location?

You can only share your current location in a messaging conversation. Select the conversation with the person whom you would like to share your location with, then select the pin drop icon. This will automatically share your current location with that recipient. Your location will not be updated automatically.

+ How do I download maps for use offline?

Maps can be downloaded when in cellular range to be used once out of cell reception. Maps cannot be downloaded over satellite. To dowload maps over cellular go to the “Tracking” tab, zoom in or out to the area you would like to download, tap on the down arrow in the bottom right corner, a blue bar will run across the top of the map indicating status of the download.

+ If I share with a new person can they see my previous locations?

No. A recently added person will only see data from when they were added and on.

+ How many users can track me simultaneously?

You can add a maximum of 10 users to track your location.

SOS

+ How do you trigger an SOS message?

  1. Remove the blue SOS cap from the device.
  2. Press and hold the “SOS” button on the light blue keypad for 6 seconds, the “Sending SOS” LED indicator will start to blink white.
  3. Ensure the device is facing up with the Somewear logo facing the sky.
  4. When your SOS message is delivered the “SOS Delivered” LED indicator will turn solid white.

+ How do I cancel an SOS message?

  1. Press and hold the “SOS” button on the light blue keypad for 6 seconds, the “Sending SOS” and “SOS Delivered” LED indicators will blink white simultaneously.
  2. Ensure the device is facing up with the Somewear logo facing the sky.
  3. Both the “Sending SOS” and “SOS Delivered” LEDs will turn off once the cancellation message has been delivered.

+ Can I message my dispatchers directly?

If your phone is connected to your Somewear Global Hotspot you can use the Somewear app to message your emergency responders. When you transmit an SOS distress call and it is received by GEOS (emergency response partner), a new conversation with “Emergency Responders” will appear in your “Messages” tab in app. You can communicate with your dispatchers here.

+ Does Somewear manage the SOS monitoring service?

Somewear is partnered with a professional global emergency response organization called GEOS. You can find more information about GEOS here: http://www.geosresponse.com/index.html#why-geos.

DEVICE SPECIFICATIONS

+ How long does Somewear take to charge?

The Somewear Global Hotspot will charge from 1% to 100% in approximately 1 hour.

+ What is the Somewear Global Hotspot's battery life?

The Somewear Global Hotspot can send/receive 1000+ messages on one charge or send a location pin every 10 minutes for 11 days. This assumes a clear line of sight to the sky.

+ Is Somewear waterproof?

Yes. Somewear is rated to IPX7. It can be submerged a maximum of 3 feet for 30 minutes.

+ Is Somewear Bluetooth enabled?

Yes. Somewear utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy. No GATT profiles are available for development just yet.

+ What kind of warranty do you provide?

DATA & USAGE

+ How can I upgrade to a more robust account if needed?

As we just launched, currently all upgrade requests will be handled through support. Shortly we'll release more robust settings that you can manage through your account on somewear.co.

+ Where can I see how many messages/pin drops I have left?

We currently do not offer the ability to view remaining data in real time. For the time being, you will be able to assess your data usage through billing statements.
